The Best Birthday Pizza in Venice (And Why It's Cheaper Than You Think)

Here's the thing about throwing a kid's birthday party in Venice.

You're already paying for the bounce house. The cake. All the things to match the themes. Drinks. Schedule the frutero cart. The early wake up call to reserve the benches at Oakwood Park. Somewhere in there you also have to feed twenty kids and a dozen parents and the one uncle who shows up hungry every time.

So when it comes to the pizza, most parents in Venice end up at Costco, Domino's, or Fresh Brothers. I get it. The math seems obvious. Big pies, low price, done.

I want to make the case that you're choosing wrong.

The 20-inch plain mootz is $27.95

Let me give you the number first, because the number is the point. A 20-inch plain cheese pie is $27.95 before tax. That's a real 20 inches, bigger than a Costco pie, almost twice the size of a Domino's "large," and the same size as a Fresh Brothers extra-large for less money.

It feeds 4 adults comfortably. Or 8–10 kids at a party. Cut into 16 slices, double-cut, that's under two bucks a slice for real pizza made with Italian flour, whole-milk mozzarella, and an uncooked tomato sauce that actually tastes like tomatoes. Or do the square cut, tons of little pieces.

Costco's pie is $9.99 and it's frozen-style sheet pizza built to fill a stomach. Domino's is around $13 for a 14-inch large. Fresh Brothers is closer, around $22 for their large cheese, but their large is 16 inches. Ours is 20.

If you want a pizza that fills a kid up, any of those will do. If you want a pizza your guests actually compliment, you want ours.

Cut it however your party needs it

When you order whole pies for a party, you have three cut options. No upcharge for any of them.

The square cut is the move for younger kids. No folding. No floppy tips. Little hands grab a square, eat it in two bites, come back for another. Less mess. Less waste.

For most birthday parties, 8 pies is roughly 30–50 kids worth of food, depending on the cut and how aggressively the dads attack the table.

What you're actually paying for

I'll be straight with you. You can throw a birthday party with Costco pizza and nobody's going to call CPS. The kids will eat it. The party will happen.

But the pizza is also the thing the parents remember. Three months later, at the dog park or school pickup, what they remember is whether the food was any good. Not the bounce house. Not the favors.

The pizza is made with Caputo flour from Italy. The mozzarella is Grande, whole-milk, the cheese my Uncle Vinny in Bayonne told me to use the day I took over. The sauce is uncooked Alta Cucina tomatoes. The dough is fermented for 48 hours. None of that costs you extra. It's just what we make.

Costco is selling you calories. We're selling you pizza.

Salad pizza, BBQ chicken, everything bagel crust

If you want to mix it up beyond plain and pep, the Salad Pizza has been here since 1995. Avocado dressing, salad piled on cold over a baked crust. Adults eat it standing at the counter while their kids destroy the cheese pies. BBQ Chicken and the Everything Bagel Crust are the other two classics.

For a typical party, I'd build the order like this.

How to order

Call (310) 396-7334 with 24 hours notice. Tell us the date, the headcount, and how you want it cut. Pickup at 1407 Abbot Kinney Blvd, or delivery in Venice, Mar Vista, Santa Monica, Culver City, Marina Del Rey, and Playa Vista.

If you've got 30 kids screaming in your backyard on a Saturday afternoon, the last thing you need is a pizza that's a problem. We're a 5-minute drive from most of Venice. Same corner for 30 years. The pizza is great. The price is fair. The kids will eat it. The parents will ask where it came from.
